Real Estate & Personal Property: Gifts of long-term appreciated property to a qualified non-profit organization, such as the Columbia College Foundation, can be highly advantageous and may reduce or eliminate your exposure to capital gains tax. We recommend you discuss the potential benefits of gifting real estate or personal property to the Foundation with a qualified attorney or tax accountant.

Trusts, Wills, and Bequests: You can include the Columbia College Foundation in your will or trust, turn over a life insurance policy that is no longer needed, or make the college a beneficiary of your retirement plan. These opportunities will not only help the college, but may also help ease your tax liability.

We highly recommend that you work with an estate planning attorney and/or tax accountant to plan your estate. You may wish to discuss with them including one the following statements in your will:

  • Specific Bequest: "I bequeath _________________ Dollars ($______) to Columbia College Foundation, a non-profit corporation located in Sonora, CA."
  • Residuary Bequest: "I bequeath ____ Percent (__ %) of the residue of my estate to Columbia College Foundation, a non-profit corporation located in Sonora, CA."
  • Contingent Bequest: "If _________ (relative's full legal name) does not survive me or is unable to inherit this bequest, I direct that it be paid to Columbia College Foundation, a non-profit corporation located in Sonora, CA."

A bequest can be directed to a specific program or purpose at Columbia College or you can tell us to apply it to our unrestricted fund, which we can use towards the need that we believe is most pressing at the time it is received. In order to ensure that we will be able to use your donation, we ask you to consult us first if you are considering a bequest for a specific purpose.

Memorial and Tribute Gifts: A thoughtful way of honoring someone special and creating a living legacy is by making a gift to the Foundation in a loved one's name or memory. This can include establishing a named scholarship.

Stocks & Bonds: Gifts of appreciated securities can give donors attractive tax benefits while helping the college. The Foundation will be happy to assist you in arranging a transfer of stocks or bonds.

Pledges: Pledges allow you to make a contribution with payments spread over a period of time. Reminders will be sent to you about your commitment on a schedule that you establish with us.

In-Kind Donations: The Columbia College Foundation welcomes in-kind contributions, such as equipment, fine art, books, professional services, and other collections and supplies that may benefit our faculty and students.

Matching Gifts: You may be able to double your gift to the Columbia College Foundation if you work for a company that matches employees' donations. More than 900 corporations match their employees' charitable donations. To find out if your employer offers this valuable benefit, please contact your human resources department.

Payroll Deduction: If you are an employee of the Yosemite Community College District (YCCD), you can opt for your donations to be automatically withdrawn from your paycheck. Please email or call Amy Nilson (209.588.5055) to request a copy of the YCCD Employee Contribution form.

Attend Events and Bring Friends: Our events are designed primarily to help the Foundation make new friends and give back to our community. After covering our overhead costs, we use all proceeds from admissions, sponsorships, and auctions to benefit our students. If you would like to be notified of future Foundation-sponsored events, please email
