Child Development Instructional Program

Child Development Home Page PicThe Columbia College Child Development Instructional Program is proud to serve our community by providing hands on courses that prepare students for careers with children.  Our goal for students is that they become critical thinkers, have appropriate academic and work place skills, and leave our program ready to support children and families.  Columbia College Child Development students experience high quality child care, work effectively in groups, study up to date research on how children learn best, and engage in advocacy on behalf of children and families.

Columbia College Child Development Instructional Program offers two certificates and an AS Degree in Child Development. The Associate Teacher Certificate is an entry level certificate perfect for a student that needs to jumpstart a career in early childhood education.  Students who earn this certificate are qualified to apply for the California Child Development Permit at the Associate Teacher level. To see the requirements for the Associate Teacher Certificate, click here and open bookmarks.

The Child Development Certificate includes the practical course work students need as they work towards a California Child Development Permit at the Teacher level.  This certificate is a stepping stone for an AS Degree in Child Development which is highly recommended for students interested in a career in Early Childhood Education. To see the requirements for the Associate Teacher Certificate, click here and open bookmarks.

The AS Degree in Child Development is highly recommended for all interested students including those who may continue on for a BA/BS in a related field.  Students who earn an AS Degree in Child Development will be eligible to apply for the California Child Development Permit at the Teacher level. (Students will need to accrue additional days of experience beyond those included in the AS Degree.) Please refer to the Columbia College Child Development Courses to Permit Matrix Chart for additional information about coursework as it relates to permits.
