Columbia College Displays William Walter Collection of Artifacts

Columbia College invites the public to view and appreciate the artifacts in the William Walter collection on display in the Manzanita Building Rotunda; open 8am - 7pm, Monday to Friday through December 21, 2012.

This collection of Native American artifacts was presented to the Columbia College Foundation in 1974 by Mr. William Walter. The items represent only a small portion of the materials collected by Mr. Walter during his lifetime.

"This cross-section of Native American material culture includes pottery, baskets, weaving, Kachina dolls, beaded ornaments, and wearing apparel. Items in the collection date from the early nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. Principally, the tribes represented are of the southwestern United States and include the Pima, Zuni, Hopi, Navajo, Jicarilla Apache, Keresan, and California Mission tribes. However, a few artifacts, namely the beaded works, represent the Sioux and the Cheyenne." –Jim Leitzell

Jim Leitzell, former curator/preparator of the Rotunda Exhibition Space catalogued and cared for this curios collection, preserving this time capsule of American Indian History. We feel lucky that this diverse and interesting collection has been preserved for us and future generations.

Preparator Lori Hanson.
