Doctorate Awarded to Columbia College
Counselor
Columbia College Counselor Lynn
Martin was recently awarded a Ph.D. degree in higher
education administration from Capella
University’s School of Education.
She has been affiliated with Columbia
College full-time since
1996.
A native of Davis, California, Martin received a bachelor
of arts degree in physical education from San Francisco State
University in 1965. She started
her career in education as a teacher in the San Mateo Union
High School
District where she coached several women’s sports,
including basketball, softball, tennis and badminton.
During the 1970s, Martin ranked fourth in women’s tennis
doubles in Northern California. She was also
inducted in 1988 into the San
Francisco State University’s Hall of Fame for women’s
basketball.
In fall 1984, she taught high school in San
Mateo and came up to Sonora
in the spring as a ski instructor at Dodge Ridge in Pinecrest. Her local
contacts in education led to several part-time positions at Columbia College,
including counselor and student activities advisor before achieving full-time employment
status.
Martin earned a master’s degree in 1978 from the University of San Francisco
in physical education and a master’s degree in 1990 in counseling from the University of LaVerne. In
fall 2004, she served as Columbia
College’s interim dean of
learning support services.
Martin continually encourages college students to strive for
success. “While in school, seize the opportunity to learn and become what you
want to be,” she said. “Don’t get discouraged and don’t give up on education.”
