Careers Subject Guide

Books, Movies and Music

  • Occupational Outlook Handbook (online edition)
  • Library catalogs and many other search tools use Library of Congress Subject Headings to describe the content of all of their books, eBooks, CDs, DVDs, etc. Useful subject headings for career searches are:
  • occupations
  • job descriptions
  • personality and occupation
  • vocational guidance
  • You can also use specific careers followed by vocational guidance. For example, nursing--vocational guidance or computer science--vocational guidance.
  • You might also try a search using two terms or phrases together. For example, scientists AND vocational guidance or lawyers AND vocational guidance typed in the basic search box as a "words or phrase" search, displays the items that have both those terms in their catalog records. This will be a broader search than the subject searches.
