Updating the Windows XP and 2000 Operating Systems

When you are on the computer, it is important that you download and install critical updates that Microsoft has released for the Windows operating system. These updates can help to close security vulnerabilities that can allow malicious users to access your system.
In order for Windows Updates to function properly, check your computer's clock. If it is not correct, right-click on the clock in your computer's toolbar and then select Adjust Date/Time.

Set the date and time if necessary. Click Apply and Okay.
Open up Internet Explorer, then from the Tools menu, select Windows Update. If you are prompted with a Security Warning, click on Yes. If this is the first time you are updating your windows then you may be taken to a Genuine Windows Validation screen and continue to go through the various screens. You will eventually see a Welcome to Windows Update page. On the right hand side will be a message box stating "Automatic Updates turned on or off".

If your computer is not set to receive updates you should click on Pick a time to install updates.

You can check for updates manually but it is easier to schedule regular maintenance and automatic updates. Use the Express option to check manually for updates.
