High Tech Center
(HTC)
located in Manzanita 18-3.
The HTC is closed for class instruction at various times.
Please check for open lab hours at HTC entrance.
We currently have computers located within the high tech center and network programs available to all student computers campus wide to help you in your quest of gaining a degree at Columbia College.
We have a variety of programs and hardware including, but not limited to:
AlphaSmart:
The AlphaSmart is a small portable compact word processor that allows the student to type notes in class, then download the files to a computer for editing. These portable word processors can be checked out for the entire semester through DSPS and EOPS. Make sure you let your counselor know that you would like to use one of these easy-to-use word processors when you schedule your classes. These items go fast, and it is first come, first served.
Dragon Naturally Speaking:
Dragon Naturally Speaking is an application that allows you to speak to the computer and create documents, navigate the web, go between applications and read and write email. This is truly a very innovative application for students with mobility issues, allowing you access to the computer world.
"JAWS"
Jaws is a screen reading program that allows low vision and blind students the ability to read, type and access the internet.
Kurzweil 3000:
See it and hear it: Kurzweil is a system that allows the user to scan or import files of different types and have the computer read the text to you. This is an advantage to persons with dyslexia, poor eye control and text tracking problems. Kurzweil also offers the user the ability to create their own audio file from loaded books for their personal use and download.
MagniSight CCTV:
This is a magnification Closed Circuit Television Screen (CCTV) that will allow you to place a book or article on it and view the magnified image on a 24" color monitor. The user has complete control of size, color. and focus.
Talking Calculator:
We currently have on computer talking calculators on all the computers in the high tech center. They are available to all users in the high tech center.
We also have portable taking calculators that are available for checkout to students who qualify.
Text-to-Audio:
Text-to-Audio allows the user to create audio files, from document and text files, and save and play them on your computer, personal CD or MP3 player. You have the capability to place your entire text book on a CD and have it read to you.
Typing Tutor:
Helps you learn and increase the speed of you typing. This is very helpful in an environment that requires most of you school work to be typed.
Digital and Tape Recorders:
T hese recorders are used by students with disabilities, and can be checked out from DSPS for use in the classroom or other college related situations.
ZoomText:
ZoomText is screen magnification software that allows the user it increase or decrease the view size of the computer screen. Whether you are working on the web or most programs on the computer, you control the magnification of the screen. Zoom text also has the ability to read the text on the screen, and echo the words or letters you are typing.
