Grant Miller
Head Assistant Coach (6th Year)
Grant Miller is now in his sixth full season as a Claim Jumper assistant
coach. His duties include scouting opponents, on-floor coaching, game
preparation, study hall monitor and fundraising.
Prior to his arrival
at Columbia, Miller spent one season (2002-2003) as Rien’s second assistant
at Oakdale High School. Before that Miller coached girls’ basketball for
seven seasons, three of those as the Varsity head coach. He led the Lady
Mustangs to two CIF Sac-Joaquin Division III Section Playoff berths in three
years.
In turn Miller has also had a more than respectable high school coaching
career as Oakdale High’s Tennis coach. He has led the Men’s squad to one
Valley Oak League title (1997) and the Women’s squad to three Valley Oak
League titles (1997, 2000 & 2005). His women’s teams have reached the
playoffs six out of the past nine years.
Miller, a 1994 graduate of California State University, Fresno, with a
bachelor’s degree in Language Arts, played at Reedley High School from
1986-1990. He also played collegiate Tennis for Kings River Community
College, now renamed Reedley College (1991-1992).
“Grant and I have been colleagues for ten years,” said Rien. “We worked
together in the English Department at Oakdale High School and now in
coordinating fundraising efforts and individual player work for the Columbia
Basketball Program.” According to Miller, “I think our tight-knit
relationship (Coach Rien and myself) has made us a very compatible and
efficient tandem whose primary focus is to nurture the emotional and
physical well-being of our student-athletes. In turn, the addition of coach
Cuslidge will make our coaching unit even tighter. He is an excellent
teacher of the game and shares the same philosophy of the game that the rest
of us do.”
Miller, 36, is married to his wife of twelve years, Camille LeAnn. They have
two boys- David Richard, 18, Zackary John, 10- and a brand new daughter
Riley, 1. The family resides in Oakdale, where Miller teaches at Oakdale
High School.
