Recommended Text: Understanding and Using English Grammar 4th Ed. by Betty Azar
Required Novel: The Pearl by John Steinbeck
Recommended reading: Various articles and short readings will be assigned for discussion and comprehension. Independent reading of English books, magazines, newspapers, and Internet sites is encouraged.
Writing: A variety of sentences, paragraphs, and essays will be assigned. You will be required to produce a summary of The Pearl. You will also produce a five-paragraph expository essay.
Listening: You will be required to listen to lectures, group discussions, and one film (The Pearl) and to respond orally and in writing. You will also be required to observe one Columbia College class (art, English, child development, etc.) at your convenience. You must obtain the course syllabus, take notes, and present your findings to your classmates in ESL 606.
Speaking: You will be required to participate in group discussions, debates, and presentations.
Grading: Points will be awarded for completing course assignments and exercises and for demonstrating involvement in the course. Grades will be determined by a weighted percentage of points possible.
Written assignments: 10-50 points each
Grammar tests: 10-20 points each
Reading comprehension: 10-20 points each
Vocabulary: 10-20 points each
Grades: 90% - 100% A
80% - 89% B
70% - 79% C
60% - 69% D
Below 60% F
Important dates:
February 5, 2010 – Last day to withdraw on campus without a “W” showing on record
February 7, 2010 – Last day to withdraw on the web without a “W” showing on record
February 11, 2010 – Last day to elect for Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grading
April 5, 2010 – Last day to withdraw
Late assignments will be dropped one letter grade for each class day late. Class participation will influence the final grade in the course. Assignments not handed in will receive failing grades (F).
Attendance: It is essential that you attend all classes. If you miss two classes consecutively, you will be dropped from the class unless you contact me to discuss your absences and to keep current with course progress.
Course Format: Class will usually begin with greetings and pronunciation exercises, then move on to idioms and vocabulary. From there, we will address any questions you have about homework or other course assignments. We will continue with the novel, other readings, and written assignments.
